The eights of the Minor Arcana are anchored by Major Arcanum VIII, The Balance or as it sometimes called in other traditions, Justice.  The Balance is ruled by Capricorn, and its key phrases are Undeviating Natural Law and also Human Justice, which is limited and fallible.

Our first Eight in the Minor Arcana is the Eight of Scepters.  The key phrase for the outer meaning of this card is Political Appointment.  Other mundane interpretations could be:

Business success through initiative

Think before you act

 Action of a legal nature

Transfer at work

Prestige in the professional world

The astrological meaning of the Eight of Scepters is symbolized by the Aries decanate of Sagittarius, Aqila.  The Eagle, flying higher than any other earthly creature, has come to represent exploration into the spiritual realm.  The fiery pioneering spirit of Aries coupled with the migratory instincts of Sagittarius makes for a combination unbeatable in seeking out a brave new world.  Restlessness is the nature of those born under this decanate and to confine, restrict, or force them into a tiresome and repetitive lifestyle or occupation will only bring on depression, hostility, and criticism.  It is very important for those born under this decanate to have important goals to achieve, to dare where no man has gone before, to involve the mind, and seek out new facts.  The key word for this decanate is EXPLORATION.

The majestic Eagle, according to the many mythologies, delivers the nectar of the gods to earthlings before returning to his lifelong mate. Zain writes in Spiritual Astrology: Love or desire is the motive power behind every action.  It also stimulates every thought.  Activity takes, therefore, the direction of the strongest desire…”

In sleep, we most often indulge in fanciful creations, even though we have a choice to sleep more consciously and benefit from information gleaned there.  The same could be said for our waking hours.  We always have a choice, like the Eagle flies, as to where our hearts and minds travel.  Why not opt for the best choice. The spiritual message of the Eight of Scepters is:  In sleep the soul wanders on the wings of its desires to the region most attractive to it; let that region, therefore, be the highest
