THE FIVE OF SWORDS

The last card anchored by Major Arcanum V, even though it is a sword, is still lucky.  The key phrase for the outer meaning of the Five of Swords is ESCAPE FROM DANGER.  Other mundane interpretations could be:

  •   Discrimination (Virgo) replaces impulsiveness
  •   Alertness (Mercury) pays off
  •   Benefit from reorganization of work space
  •   Overcome religious adversity (Hierophant)
  •   Quarrels about possessions  (Taurus)

The key word for the astrological meaning of the Five of Swords is STRUGGLE.  In this second decanate of Taurus, the fixity of this sign is challenged by the analytical aspect of Virgo and, consequently, some previously accepted condition in life is focused upon and a conflict arises.  Usually, this conflict reflects a struggle to be better than before, Virgonian-style.  Another key phrase that might be useful is struggle for supremacy.

The spiritual message of the Five of Swords is related to us through the picture of Orion in the heavens holding up his club against the mighty enraged bull rushing toward him.  Unlike the timid hare that scampers away from beneath his feet, Orion does not attempt to retreat from the problem of the bull but squarely faces his challenge.  Zain writes from Spiritual Astrology, “No situation of life should cause the soul to quail.  Whatever physical disaster may come, whatever distasteful thing may be uncovered in the recesses of the unconscious mind, it is always better to face it squarely, to recognize it for what it is, and then to formulate plans by which the situation may best be met.”  The spiritual message of the Five of Swords is: The task of the soul on every plane of manifestation is to struggle with and overcome the limitations of its environment.  __C.C.
