The Fives of the Minor Arcana are anchored to Major Arcanum V, the Heirophant, in most other decks called The Pope. Ruled by Jupiter, the key words for The Heirophant are Religion, Law, Ethics, Good Will, Abundance, Generosity, Benevolence, Faith, Charity, Joviality and, basically, Good Luck. Therefore, the Fives of the Minor Arcana are generally a manifestation of Good Luck.
The first of four Fives in this series is the Five of Scepters, and the outer meaning for this card is GOOD FORTUNE IN BUSINESS. Other key phrases might be:
Gain through speculation
Inspiration through religion
Good will of customers and clients
The inner astrological meaning of the Five of Scepters is based on the Sagittarius decanate of Leo, Centaurus, sub-ruled by Jupiter. Centaurus is pictured in the heavens as a being with the body of a horse and the upper torso of a man. He is impaling the wolf that is pictured in the last decanate of Libra. The wolf symbolizes those who use their intellects to suppress the truth and sow the seeds of ignorance and superstition in order to profit by exploitation. As those born in this decanate have powerful persuasive abilities, it is important for them to take care not to disseminate the wrong information. The Key Word for inner meaning of this decanate is REFORMATION or REFORM.
There are two centaurs in the heavens. Centaurus is the smaller of the two, occupying 10 degrees, while Sagittarius occupies 30 degrees. Both are ruled by Jupiter and relate to gifts and the higher mind. Zain uses the garb of Santa Claus to contrast and compare these two “horsemen in the sky.” Santa Clause wears a bright red coat to represent the heat of summer, or the decanate of Centaurus which is next to the firey furnace of Crater. Santa’s coat, however, is lined with pure white fur to symbolize the snow of winter, as represented by the sign of Sagittarius. Jupiter, the ruler of both Sagittarius and Centarus, is associated with benevolence and religion. Just as Santa promises material gifts and the return of summer, religion promises spiritual blessings after the hard dark days on earth are done. The gifts of Santa Claus as represented by the smaller constellation of Centaurus, while pleasurable, are not as great as the gifts promised by a spiritual endeavor. Such a spiritual endeavor is dependent upon what is done for others. Hence, the spiritual message is: It is more blessed to give than to receive, and to receive in full measure, we must first give of that which we already have.
